Life's Lessons Become Gifts for Life

John Gardner believes in being selfless. A graduate of McDonogh School, John credits education and experiences there with sparking his desire to give back to a community that gave him so much. In 1931, John's father became incapacitated due to complications of a stroke, experiencing paralysis on his right side and the inability to walk. He was unable to say words or make conversation. For thirty years, John watched as his father, with a strong character and cheerful disposition, battled back from a debilitating situation.

Living through his father's illness and rehabilitation, coupled with the satisfaction John experienced from his McDonogh education and continued activity with his alumni association's scholarship fund, taught John many valuable lessons. At 85 years of age, John is using these life lessons of selflessness to help support St. Joseph Medical Center.

For John, who gives back to a number of charitable organizations in the Maryland area, St. Joseph Medical Center is number one. John has created three charitable gift annuities that will benefit St. Joseph Medical Center's Heart Institute. His wife, Jane, who passed away in 1988, received care at St. Joseph, and John had open-heart surgery at the medical center in 1996. "For me, the choice to give to St. Joseph was very personal and I am very grateful for the excellent care my wife and I received," says John. "St. Joseph Medical Center is very dear to me for all they have done for us. And given the opportunity, I was more than happy to make these gifts and to tell others about opportunities like charitable gift annuities as a way to give back to the community and keep the spirit of selflessness alive and growing."
